Stop Barking Already

Primo, Crocket, and Tubbs—our fur babies.  All three are labs.  Primo, 13, is a chocolate.  Crockett and Tubbs are 5 years old.  They’re yellow lab, litter mates.  We love them.  All of them.  They’re loving, affectionate, and cute.  Their cuteness ends however, the second they start barking.  Can you relate?  Do you want to get your dogs to stop barking?

You want to be a good pet parent.  You want your dog to obey your commands, especially your command, “stop barking.”

Your dog’s constant barking is annoying to you.  It’s embarrassing too.  “Why can’t you make your dog stop barking?”  “Get him under control!”

You’ve Tried

Ignoring the barking doesn’t work.  You’ve tried.  Removing your dog from the situation that caused him to start barking sometimes works.

You know the triggers.  Traffic, TV, the doorbell, squirrels, swans, wind, boats.  The neighbor in his yard.

Barking is not only annoying and embarrassing, it is loud and hurts your ears.  Plus, your neighbors don’t appreciate nuisance barking.

NOT.ONE.BIT.

“Stop Barking” and Other Commands

“No bark.”

“Enough.”

“Quiet.”

“Stop barking.”

Your commands haven’t worked.

Bark Collar

We tried using a bark collar on Tubbs.  He is our dog with THE WORST bark ever.  It pierces my ears.  There was a bit of improvement with his bark collar, but it didn’t eliminate his barking.  It also didn’t help keep the other two dogs from barking.

I also discovered that our bark collar wasn’t water proof.  Living on a lake and having a pool made for a short life of Tubbs’ bark collar.  The barking continued.

Nuisance to the Neighbors

We heard through the grapevine that our neighbor was less than impressed with our barking dogs.  Understandably so.  Every time he is out in his yard, Crockett and Tubbs go bonkers, barking at him.  Even with my commands to “stop barking” they continue.

A Solution

My sister-in-law helped us solve the problem of the barking dogs.  She sent me a link to PetSafe Outdoor Ultrasonic Bark Deterrent.  This device emits a safe, ultrasonic noise, that only dogs can hear.  When they bark and hear this high pitched sound, they learn not to bark.

Intrigued, yet skeptical, I read the reviews.  There were reviews of complete satisfaction along with those that said it doesn’t work.  Other reviews indicated that the battery life was short.

Ever frugal, yet willing to give it a try, I ordered the bird house shaped bark deterrent.  Thanks to Amazon Prime, it arrived two days later.

Immediately, I opened the box, read the instructions, and inserted a 9-volt battery.  I placed the “bird house” outside and let the dogs out.  Silence.  They ran around in their usual pattern, without barking!

People Will Notice

We started using the bark deterrent on a Wednesday.  On Saturday night, our friend was over for dinner.  He loves our dogs.  He really does.  He’s our dog sitter when we are away, so he knows they love to bark.  Halfway through dinner, he asks, “why aren’t your dogs barking anymore?”

We shared our recent success with him.  Immediately, he ordered one as a gift, for his dad, for Father’s Day.  His dad isn’t the barker.  His dad’s dog is though!  LOL.

You May Find Out

If your dog or dogs don’t stop barking, they may have a hearing issue.  Or they just might not care about the high pitched sound they get as feedback when they bark.  If that is the case, try something else.

I’ve moved the unit around to experiment with the best location.  You may find that you need to move it for optimal results.  Our backyard is about 150′ long.  The dogs have barked when I had the setting on 2 and they were at the end of our yard.  I increased the setting to 4 and it worked better.

After about two weeks of use, the light started to flash indicating that the battery was getting low.  We’ve yet to change the battery.  The dogs are still quiet so I’m assuming it is still working.

We turn the device off at night and bring it inside to protect it from the wind and rain.  It is advertised to be weatherproof, but it is not a problem to bring it in each night.

There is a wire loop at the top so that if you wanted, you could hang it or mount it outdoors.  I recommend that you consider the location for ease of access as you’ll need to get it down periodically to change the battery.

Silence is Golden

I am happy with my PetSafe Outdoor Ultrasonic Bark Deterrent.  It is the best way we’ve found to get our dogs to stop barking.  They are more subdued indoors and out.  We only use the device outdoors, as directed.

It’s changed our dogs and household dynamics.  My husband is much happier with quieter dogs.  I am too!
